John came to dance quite late in life – originally he excelled in sports – most spectacularly on the football field where there was a distinct possibility of him turning professional at a young age. He took the odd dance class and knew that he really had a passion for it but 'football and dance' seemed at either end of the spectrum to him growing up in Ireland. His family insisted that his education had to come first - so after graduating with a 1st in History and Politics from Dublin University - he took the major decision that despite his academic achievements - he wanted to focus full time on dance and choreography.
As a relatively penniless graduate he worked nights to save sufficient money to take himself off to New York, to further his dream and learn his craft from the very best choreographers and dance teachers that New York and LA had to offer. Whilst there, he trained at the legendary Debbie Reynolds Studios in Hollywood where teachers from all around the world and with highly impressive training backgrounds teach – their styles ranging from Alvin Ailey to The Brooklyn Ballet to the "Streets".
His hours of hard training paid off as he started to audition for work Stateside as a Dancer. His talent, discipline and his dedication to his craft was rewarded as over a remarkably very short period of time he had the honour and pleasure of dancing on stage with BEYONCE, JANET JACKSON, MARIAH CAREY, JUSTIN BIEBER, FERGIE, RIHANNA – the cream of the US pop. He also appeared in some of the record industry's most prolific pop videos. Not bad for an Irish History and Politics graduate who had come to dance long after most others of his peers – who had been training since they were kids!
On his return to Dublin he trained further in Dublin at their College of Dance before starting his own 'teaching' career and today the classes he teaches at Pineapple Dance Studios, the London Studio Centre – are packed with aspiring dancers wanting some of his talent and gift to rub off on them. He has toured and given major workshops and guest master-classes worldwide and has recently taught in Poland, Italy and Hong Kong.
Over the last 6 years he has appeared on endless TV Shows – MTV European Music Awards, X-Factor, Brit Awards, Mobo Awards, T4 on the Beach, This Morning, Loose Women – to name just some.
Since those early years he has now worked with and choreographed for the likes of Leona Lewis, JLS, Alexandra Burke, The Saturdays, The Wanted, Alesha Dixon, Rihanna, Peter Andre as well as having amassed a pretty impressive list of corporate clients who have benefited from his incredible ability to produce top class choreography for their brands and events - BMW, Puma, Reebok, Google, L'Oreal, Ford, Rockport, Nike, Adidas, Hennessy, Aviva, Capital FM Jingle Bell Ball, Capital FM Summertime Ball, The Prince's Trust, Rimmel, Lever – to name just some.
His innovative and unique style, his easy-going manner and likeability together with his ability to create stunning, 'new school 'choreography is highly sought after both here and in the US and he is undoubtedly one of the UK's leading lights in this ever growing and specialised arena.
